چکیده

a a ABSTRACT: Performance modeling for scientific production codes is of interest both for program tuning and for the selection of new machines. An empirical method is used for developing a model to predict the runtime of large parallel weather prediction programs. The different steps of the method are outlined giving examples from two different programs of the DWD (German Weather Service). The first one is the new local model (LM) of DWD. The second one is the old Deutschland Model (DM) which is characterized by more complicated algorithmic steps and parallelization strategies. a a a

Parallelizing Operational Weather Forecast Models for Portable and Fast Execution

This paper describes a high level library (The Nearest Neighbor Tool: NNT) that has been used to parallelize operational weather prediction models. NNT is part of the Scalable Modeling System (SMS), developed at the Forecast Systems Laboratory (FSL). Programs written in NNT rely on SMS's run-time system and port between a wide range of computing platforms, performing well in multiprocessor syst...

Progress Toward Demonstrating Operational Capability of Massively Parallel Processors at the Forecast Systems Laboratory

Two mesoscale numerical weather prediction models, Eta and the Rapid Update Cycle (RUC), are currently being run operationally at the U.S. National Weather Service’s National Meteorological Center to produce nationwide weather forecasts. Improvements in weather forecast accuracy depend on increasing model resolution, which is limited by available computing resources. Massively Parallel Processi...

Data-Parallel Numerical Weather Forecasting

In this paper we describe the implementation of a numerical weather forecast model on a massively parallel computer system. This model is a production code used for routine weather forecasting at the meteorological institutes of several European countries. The modi cations needed to achieve a data-parallel version of this model without explicit message passing are outlined. The achieved perform...

Performance and Portability in Parallel Computing: a Weather Forecast View

We have developed a high level library, the Nearest Neighbor Tool (NNT), to facilitate the coding of finite difference approximation weather prediction models on parallel computers. NNT provides portability and ease of programming and at the same time optimizes performance by allowing the overlap of computation and communication to tolerate the latency of remote data moves. In this paper we des...

A Methodology For Developing High Performance Computing Models: Storm-Scale Weather Prediction

A methodology for developing future generations of a storm-scale weather prediction model for Massively Parallel Processing is described. The forecast model is the Advanced Regional Prediction System (ARPS), a three-dimensional, fully compressible, non-hydrostatic predictive model. In the short term, the computational goals include developing a portable, scalable model for distributed memory SI...
